Every aspect of life, like every commodity, is imbued with self-referential meaning; every choice an emblem of identity, a mark of difference, each one a message to ourselves and to others of the sort of person we are. As we have noted, consumption is a signifier 18 ADULT LEARNING IN POSTMODERNITY of difference—of the need to make oneself different and to identify with those who are different. Lifestyle practices, given the emphasis on novelty, fashion, taste and style, are practices of consumption and moreover of a consumption which is potentially unending, since as desire can never be satisfied, there is always the need for new experiences and new learning.

Again, we can turn to Burbules (1995) for help. He argues that postmodern incredulity requires us to change our conception of education and educational activities. First, education involves an engagement between teachers, learners and knowledge. Since this engagement can lead to dependency, there is a need for critical distance. This means that teachers need to problematise their conventional role as ‘enlightened pedagogues’. They need to avoid taking themselves too seriously even when they are engaged in education for social transformation.

Harvey (1991) points to a postmodern aesthetic which celebrates difference, ephemerality, spectacle, fashion and the commodification of cultural forms. Thus, in the postmodern there is an emphasis on lifestyle which is not one particular style but a whole range of practices which privilege the eclectic and the aesthetic. Where, as in the postmodern, everything is ‘up for grabs’, the distinction between high and low culture melts and everything becomes available for raiding, appropriation and recycling.
