Parker (17981869), and it is reported that Billings had as classmates the future actor Edgar Loomis Davenport (181577) and the future sculptor Thomas Ridgeway Gould (181881). 10 Another sculptor, Thomas Ball (18191911), with whom Billings would on later occasions collaborate, also attended the school at this time. Ball remembered that he "detested" it, that Parker, the reading master, was "only severe," while a Mr. " The boys wrote in the mornings and read in the afternoons. As was common in this period, the masters were assisted by monitors, older boys who drilled the younger.

This book, therefore, is based primarily on the graphic evidence of his career as artist, architect, and designer collected into a series of scrapbooks, in some cases certainly, in others presumably, by his brother-in-law, the civil engineer Nathaniel T. Bartlett (ca. ). 1 have fleshed out this information and some other primary documentation with gleanings from the journals, letters, and biographies of his patrons and clients, by citing contemporary accounts of his many activities to be found in the popular press, by collecting and cataloguing his illustrations for books and periodicals, and by reading recent histories of the culture, society, and politics of mid-nineteenth-century America.
