Even worse, he had Schelling’s own example staring him in the face. After Schelling had left the Seminary, he had staged a meteoric rise in the German philosophical world, becoming an “Extraordinarius” professor – an “extra” professor on the faculty beyond what the normal funding allowed – at Jena in his early twenties and publishing tract after tract on his own ideas about the new postKantian idealism emerging at the time in Jena.
